Summary

Large scale structure monitoring is one of the most active applications of FBG sensors. The construction and operation monitoring of large span spatial structures is an important part of social security. The measurement of mechanical parameters is very important for the maintenance and health monitoring of bridges, mines, tunnels, dams, buildings and so on. By measuring the strain distribution of the above structure, the local load and health condition of the structure can be predicted. The traditional electromagnetic sensing technology is difficult to realize long-term, real-time and on-line monitoring; it is easy to produce zero drift by electromagnetic interference, damp and chemical corrosion. The vibrating string strain gauge is not suitable for long term measurement of dynamic strain of bridge because of its frequency response characteristic; the signal line of electromagnetic sensor is numerous, the transmission distance is near and easy to be disturbed. The fiber Bragg grating sensor overcomes all the disadvantages above, which can be attached to the surface of the structure or in the pre embedded structure. The structure is detected by health detection, impact detection, shape control and vibration damping to monitor the structural defects. In the field of large space structure monitoring, advanced fiber Bragg grating sensing technology has gradually replaced the traditional electromagnetic sensing technology.
